[FUN_Mail] FW: Neuroscience Program Requesting Research Input

Here's an email from Robin Cooper to the list--it has a wealth of references to lab-based activities Robin has published and is well worth a read.

Also -- a note on the listserv: it only accepts emails from the address you have registered at funfaculty.org. So if you forward emails from that address on to a different account, replying back to the list will not work (Robin - that's what seems to have happened to your email, which bounced).

Hi,

We did not have a Neuroscience major at the University of Kentucky so a few years ago I created a major through a "Topical Studies" program. It is a program that basically allows students, with faculty mentorship, to design their own major. So this was a Topical Studies-Neuroscience emphasis Major within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Here is the web site for it.

http://web.as.uky.edu/Biology/faculty/cooper/Topical%20Studies/default.htm

It is a mix of subspecialties by taking advantage of other programs on campus. So we have 3 main focus areas within this major.

Last year we started a minor of neuroscience so by the university rules the majors have to now fulfill the requirements for the Minor and then can go one with the Topical studies Major in Neuroscience

To have the major I had to create a few new classes.

We do use a "Research class " independent study that can count towards the major. This is a lab research experience on a Neuroscience topic. Also the students have to write a Thesis for the Topical studies major. The students usually expand on the research lab projects they have been involved with. Some students have even published their research projects as primary authors. Some other students have conducted more of a review of a topic.

I created a hands on Neurophysiology Lab course as well to get students interested in more research based topics.

All the labs have protocols and Movies that students and I made of the lab exercise itself so students could view the lab prior to doing it. 3 or 4 of these labs will now be turned in to articles for JoVE.

http://web.as.uky.edu/Biology/faculty/cooper/Bio450-AS300/Bio450Fall2012.html

Click on the lab in this web page and you can pull up the movie and lab protocols.

Anyone is welcome to use them... you should be able to download them all.

If you need the raw movie files (made with Windows movie maker- free ware with windows software as far as I know) for making adjustments I can load a external drive but they are large ~ 6 GB for lab so just send a large flash drive and I can copy over for you and mail back.

These JoVE articles should be out by the end of summer I hope.

I have other JoVE artcles that can be used for Neurophysiology class/labs as well.

We require research of our psychology majors, but it is optional for our

neuroscience majors (for practical reasons--i.e., demand on faculty). We

tell those students who want to go on to Ph.D. Programs that they really should do research; for future med students, it seems less important. b
