[FUN_Mail] Neuroscience Program Requesting Reserach Input

Hi Sara,
We don't have a neurosci major/minor yet - but regarding undergrad research for our chemistry and biochem majors, we don't require research (for the reasons mentioned by others. Our main reason is the strain on faculty who would have to put up with those students who would not want to do research.) However, we do tell them that to go to a graduate program, they should do research or get some type of laboratory experience beyond laboratory classes. We try to take our students with us to scientific meetings to present their work and word of mouth makes that an attractive reason for a student to join a research team. The students can take up to 6 credits of research toward their degree. We also have a small fund to provide a bit of money for a student to continue their research in the summer.
Our biochemistry teaching lab has a research component - the juniors/seniors who take the course spend the first couple of weeks learning the basic biochem techniques and are then given a test and a control group and to hypothesize what might be different between them (this year the they are asked to propose some parameter which might be different between rats and fish). They then have to develop the method to test it and do it. The final report for each team of students is a poster session where they present their results. This provides a bit of a research experience for all our majors.
Best,
Mary Lou
