Dear all,
My name is Laura Been; I am a new faculty member at Haverford College. Now
that my research program is starting to gain momentum, I am considering how
to best handle the issue of animal technicians. As part of this, I am
hoping to gather some information from people at peer institutions about
animal care technicians at primarily undergraduate institutions.
Could you briefly tell me about your institution's arrangement for
research animal technicians? Specifically, I'm wondering:
- Does your department/college employ a dedicated animal technician to take
care of things like daily heath checks, husbandry, and breeding? Or do you
rely on student workers for this (or do it yourself)?
- If you do have a technician, are they full time or part time? Do they
work through breaks? And who pays for this position (department, college,
grant funds)?
Please email lbeen at haverford.edu with any feedback. I know this is a very
busy time of year, so any reply (even a brief one!) would be appreciated.
In the meantime, I hope your semester is finishing smoothly.
Thanks very much,
Laura
