Hi all FUN members,
I want to thank all of you who helped make the FUN events at SFN a great success. From helping out at the booth, supporting students at the poster session, attending pedagogical symposia, and just generally getting together to discuss all sorts of topics around our mission of supporting undergraduate neuroscience and teaching, it was a great conference, and I hope all who attended enjoyed their meeting and came home recharged and enthused about engaging with our students (although, perhaps still a bit jet-lagged for those of us in the Eastern half of the US).
I particularly want to thank a few people for the work that they did. Veronica Acosta in particular deserves a big thank you for all her work organizing booth, sales, and scheduling. She was the main person who organized the day-to-day activities and just made sure that everything ran smoothly. We had an exceptionally financially successful meeting thanks to her hard work organizing and running the booth. Also, a big thank you to Dave Jewett, who is stepping down at the end of this year after eight years in the treasurer's positions. He also assisted greatly in the booth activities. While he is stepping down, I'm sure we will continue to value his presence and help with FUN activities in the future.
Amy Jo Stavnezer coordinated the discussion meetings at the booth, and I was part of several very good conversations. This added aspect to our booth programming over the past several years has been an important aspect of our work at the meeting. Thanks Amy Jo!
I also want to thank Leah Chase for her work organizing the poster session and social. It was again a great success as those of you attending can attest. The 169 student presentations attests to the great interest and need for the work that we do.
And finally, I want to thank Hewlet McFarlane as he finished his role as President of FUN. As the MC of all the events at SFN, from coordinating all the meetings, to ensuring that everything and everyone ended up where they needed to be, he set a high bar that I will hope to live up to. But Hewlet is not going far, since he will now be Past-President and coordinating the poster session next year.
And finally, to all our members, and your students, thanks for your enthusiasm for supporting the organization. This next year will be a busy one as we take on strategic planning and also organizing for the 2020 Davidson FUN workshop, as well as the 2019 SFN events in Chicago. You will hear from me again soon on strategic planning, but for now, I hope you all can adjust back to your lives and work at your home institutions after a great meeting.
Cheers,
Ron Bayline
