[FUN_Mail] tracks/paths within Neuro major

Hi all,

It's me again, and this time I'm intentionally emailing all of you 😊.

I'm hoping to find colleagues who have (or HAD) Neuro programs/majors that have two different tracks or paths (or whatever you might call them). Example: a Behavioral track that is heavier in Psychology courses, and a Cellular track that has more Bio reqs. Or a B.A and a B.S. that have somewhat different course reqs. I've gone searching on websites, but after a LOT of looking, I've found very few (maybe 3?), and some websites don't have detailed lists of courses.

Those of you that do this, what is the rationale? Did you used have this option, but now you do not? Why not? Have you talked about it and decided against it? I'm interested in hearing from anyone who could share their experiences with this issue.

Please email me directly at buffald at westmintser.edu. If others are interested in what I find out, I can compile a summary of comments and forward it along.

Thanks, and hope you are all staying afloat so far!

Deanne

I do love when people speak up about SfN shenanigans! I worked at SfN for a year as a Policy & Advocacy Fellow and here’s what I can tell you:

1) NeurOnline is kept behind a paywall because the top brass wants members to feel like membership gets them something useful. It is meant to be a perk or a reason to be a member (since membership is so expensive). It’s very hard to explain to people there (few of whom have academic backgrounds) that most members only care about the meeting and nothing but the meeting! 🙄

2) I worked for them and *I* didn’t know that one could see 5 articles for free! So while I think campaigning to all those committees (as Julio said) won’t have a big impact, I do think that asking SfN to publicize those 5 free articles would be a great idea. You could sell it as a way that members can share resources with their students or other people who might be thinking about becoming members.

3) Most staffers at SfN are actually not paid terribly well, considering the cost of living in DC. Directors do alright. There are a bunch of things that most members don’t know or care about that are quite expensive: outreach is one (including BrainFacts), fellowships for certain groups (minority scholars, etc) is another, also policy advocacy is a division that basically bleeds money (they organize the Hill Day that sends SfN members in to talk to their reps and senators about the importance of basic scientific research and do lots of other good things). I had zero idea about any of that before I worked there, but it makes me feel better about the cost of membership so I figured I’d share!

Dear Julio,

Thanks for pointing out the five free accesses that are available to
NeuroOnLine each month. This will seem generous to some, but others will
wonder why the entire NeurOnLine site isn't entirely open access. SfN does
make BrainFacts open to the public, and it could do the same for the
resources on NeurOnLine.

As you have been a member of SfN Council since 2015, you have much deeper
insight into SfN's financial matters than the rest of us. SfN appears to be
a very wealthy society (I'm told it has about $70 million in reserves; is
that true?). It owns its office building in downtown Washington and employs
an extensive administrative staff, some of whom, I imagine, are paid quite
well. It spends lavishly on a Presidential Reception each year at the
annual meeting, the expense of which might easily cover the costs of
producing NeurOnLine. In my view, acting less like a corporation striving
to increase its income and more like a scientific society serving the
academic community would be a welcome change for SfN.

I hope you will post your comments to the FUN mailing list, as I'm sure I'm
not the only member of FUN who wonders about SfN's use of the high
membership dues and expensive registration fees that it collects each year.
Thanks, in advance, not just for your answers, but also for your long
service as a founding member of FUN, and, more recently, as a voice for
undergraduate education on SfN Council.

with best wishes,
Richard

Hi Richard,

These are all reasonable questions to ask. I can confirm that the reserves figure you cite is in fact pretty accurate. These are issues that have been raised in other forums, but I would recommend that the best place to raise these would be the business meeting at the upcoming SfN meeting. I can?t speak on behalf of the SfN in my capacity as a Councilor, but I can do my best to be sure that matters particularly in the arenas of education and social justice are at the forefront of the organization?s concerns, where I?ve put a lot of my energy over the last several years.

Your opinion as an SfN member matters, so taking your concerns to the business meeting would be an excellent open forum to discuss them. You can also feel free to convey them to the Executive Committee as well. The bottom line is that this is a membership organization and the members? opinions are important to the life of the organization. I?d also encourage you to remain involved and get committee assignments as that is where many of the decisions are made and initiatives begun. This approach is certainly one very important way to be sure that educators? voices are heard.

I hope you?re having a good start to the term and I look forward to seeing you in San Diego.

Best always,

Julio
