Dear FUN Colleagues,

Join us in an escape from Winter and/or just for nerdy fun.

Last Call!

The Winter 2020 CrawFly Workshop will be held Wednesday, January 8 through Sunday, January 12, 2020 at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, Texas. This workshop is sponsored by ADInstruments and A-M Systems, and hosted by Drs. Veronica Martinez Acosta and Alex Martinez from UIW and Gerard Beaudoin from Trinity University. The site announcement and registration with detailed information for this neuroscience educator workshop is: https://www.adinstruments.com/events/crawdad-crawfly-and-snailfest/crawfly-invertebrate-neurophysiology-course .

The workshop highlights teaching of principles of signal transmission in the nervous system with classic Crawdad lab exercises and behavioral and electrophysiological exercises that use the genetic tractability of fruit flies. The fly exercises highlight optogenetic manipulation to explore principles of behavior and physiology with the fruit fly model system. Participants are guided in using electrophysiological instrumentation for extracellular and intracellular recording techniques. LabChart software is taught for acquisition and analysis of physiological and behavioral data, and control of electrical and opto-genetic nerve stimulation. Sessions also include brainstorming on best practices in laboratory and classroom teaching.

As part of our continuing development of DIY teaching instrumentation, participants will each make and take home Jim Ryan’s design for an inexpensive, high quality micro-manipulator, in addition to taking home our signature optogenetic light sources. We’ll also demonstrate our recent progress on DIY equipment for inexpensive fluorescent imaging.

CrawFly workshop faculty include: Veronica Martinez Acosta and Alex Martinez (UIW), Gerard Beaudoin (Trinity University), Karen Hibbard (HHMI, Janelia Research Campus, Jim Ryan (Hobart William Smith Colleges), Ilya Vilinsky (University of Cincinnati), Bob Wyttenbach (Emory University), Ron Hoy, David Deitcher and myself (Cornell University), and Emily Pease and colleagues from ADInstruments.

Email me (brj1 at cornell.edu) or Veronica (vgmartin at uiwtx.edu) with any questions.

best wishes,

Bruce Johnson

Subject: [FUN_Mail] Graduate Program Opportunities in Germany

Dear Colleagues,

Please share the following information and attached pdf with students you think might be a good fit for these programs. Our partners in Germany have been extremely supportive of our international efforts, particularly our summer study abroad program. The PhD program at the Einstein Center for Neurosciences or the MS in Medical Neurosciences is an outstanding opportunity for students interested in combining graduate education with an experience of top-notch international neuroscience. Please address all questions to Dr. Oliver Mai-Kolerus (email below).

Thanks for the support.

The Einstein Center for Neurosciences (ECN) in Berlin is now recruiting students for its PhD program!

The ECN was initiated in 2016 to harmonize existing neurosciences training programs in Berlin. With more than 100 internationally recognized research groups, the ECN offers outstanding interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for national and international scientists, with research spanning from synapse to behavior, molecule to disease, and brain to mind.

Students currently enrolled in a BSc or MSc program and expecting to graduate before October 2020 are encouraged to apply.

Our application portal will open today, November 29, 2019:

The closing dates for applications are:

January 7, 2020 for the Einstein Center for Neurosciences PhD fellowships

January 15, 2020 for the Medical Neurosciences program

More general information about studying in Germany you will find on https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.study-in.de%2Fen%2F&data=02%7C01%7CKoreyC%40cofc.edu%7C70e43b976e994a1af21108d774cf7a59%7Ce285d438dbba4a4c941c593ba422deac%7C0%7C0%7C637106306845704694&sdata=bKk2eQsJBWUb00xcjZrFozR2q8mTLQ3HFg94%2B%2F3q6wM%3D&reserved=0.

We would be grateful if you could recommend/forward the announcement to suitable students or interested colleagues and post the enclosed posters at prominent places within your institution!

Best regards
