The SEED Fund

Dear FUN members,

We, Gerald Griffin (Councilor) and Charles Weaver (fmr Councilor), know that the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) organization is dedicated to a broad range of activities that serve to enhance the undergraduate neuroscience experience. One such action is steadfast commitment to diversity, which is why we're writing you today.

We are part of an initiative that seeks to honor Dr. Joe Martinez and Dr. James Townsel. Joe and Jim are internationally known neuroscientists whose laboratories were incubators for training competitive doctoral students who became part of the diverse biomedical work force. They also spearheaded efforts to expand the educational and professional opportunities available to underrepresented minority (URM) students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty. Both Joe and Jim are now retired and in poor health. One of their dreams is to create a perpetual fund to facilitate training of diverse scientists.

We have a chance to help Joe and Jim achieve this important career goal and to benefit the development of diverse neuroscientists for the foreseeable future. You can do this by making a donation to the Scholarships to Enhance and Empower Diversity (SEED). We need to raise $75,000 by 30 June 2019 to boost the SEED fund to endowment status. This will permit the SEED committee to establish and implement policies that facilitate our training goals, especially long-term mentoring and professional enrichment.

Please donate now at this website:

Questions may be directed to Dr. Anne Etgen (anne.etgen at einstein.yu.edu<mailto:anne.etgen at einstein.yu.edu>), Chair of the SEED Committee.

With highest regards,
Gerald and Charles
