[FUN_Mail] Advice for space-efficient lab setup

My two cents…

Robust Faraday cages are great, but I think non-robust ones work as well, and can be easier to break down after the course is over. I have made cubes out of PVC tubing and ABS joints. Laid down one strip of screen under the intertial plate, then folded strip up and over the cube (you can even make it 4 panels long so the front can be enclosed for max protection, but I don’t find that is necessary). Then wrapped another strip of screen on left, back, and right side (so double layer one back). After the course, we can take apart the cubes by hand, roll up the screen around the tubes, and store them easily.

I have sometimes made cages out of screen panels, and attached them with metal L-joints and wing-nuts. Also fairly easy to break down, and more robust.

I do like the ADI Powerlab that has the built in bioamp and stimulator, so all you need to add is a computer and high-impedance amp so footprint can be small.

I have not found a good, compact, cool temp, light source that is space efficient, so I still use fiber-optics from outside the cage. I wonder if anyone has found some good LED lamps that work on battery and don’t introduced any electrical noise….

We have a lab (using ADI/CrawFly setups) that holds 15 students and several instructors in an 800 square ft room, so we’re familiar with fitting rigs into compact spaces. Email me at ilya.vilinsky at uc.edu <mailto:ilya.vilinsky at uc.edu> and I can share pictures or video of our rigs and room.

We use AmScope MD301B-BS cameras attached to scopes (not the cheapest, but good balance of quality and price) for student scopes. Bob Wyttenbach published a great writeup of equipment for labs here <https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6153001/pdf/june-16-277.pdf&source=gmail-imap&ust=1618533579000000&usg=AOvVaw28wnHEizKqc4SuBbm0d4El>. We also have a document with lab equipment that we use that we can share as well.
