Tenure-Track Position
Department of Neuroscience

Assistant Professor of Neuroscience

The Department of Neuroscience at KENYON COLLEGE invites applications for a tenure-track position starting July of 2022. Candidates should have a PhD in Neuroscience or a related field, a strong commitment to teaching excellence, and ongoing scholarly engagement. The teaching requirement is five courses per year. Courses will include regular contributions to the department’s core courses (Introductory Neuroscience, Research Methods in Neuroscience), Sensory Systems, and additional intermediate and advanced courses. We welcome and encourage the development of new courses that reflect the candidate’s interest and expertise. We are open to the research area, but are particularly interested in neuroscientists who use rodent, or similar research models, to investigate interactions with the brain and environment (e.g., sensory or hormonal systems). The Neuroscience Department is interdisciplinary with several members appointed in other departments (Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Philosophy, and Anthropology). The Department and the College support and encourage interdisciplinary work; therefore, an ideal candidate’s work could attract students from outside the discipline, including those in the affiliated departments as well as those in the arts and humanities. A complete application will be composed of 1) a cover letter; 2) a Curriculum Vitae; 3) a ~2-page statement of the applicant's teaching philosophy that addresses experiences with and plans for teaching diverse student populations with inclusive pedagogy; 4) a ~2-page statement of the applicant’s research and scholarship with plans to include undergraduate researchers; and 5) contact information for three professional references. Unofficial graduate transcripts will be requested of candidates who advance to the interview stage. Candidates are invited to include a statement in their cover letter regarding how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected their career trajectory. All application materials must be submitted electronically through Kenyon's employment website: http://careers.kenyon.edu. Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.

Kenyon College is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE). It is the College's policy to evaluate qualified applicants without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, physical and/or mental disability, age, religion, medical condition, veteran status, marital status, or any other characteristic protected by institutional policy or state, local, or federal law. An EOE, Kenyon welcomes diversity and encourages applications from all groups historically underrepresented in the sciences. Please direct questions regarding the position or the application process to Hewlet McFarlane, Search Committee Chair (McFarlaneh at kenyon.edu<mailto:McFarlaneh at kenyon.edu>).

Title: Denison University, Tenure-Track Assistant Prof, Biological Psychology

The Department of Psychology at Denison University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Biological Psychology. The appointment will be made at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2022. Candidates are required to have by start date a Ph.D. in Psychology or a closely-related field (ABD will be considered as Instructor until Ph.D. is attained).

The successful candidate will be expected to teach (1) an upper-level content course in Biological Psychology, (2) an upper-level Biological Psychology Research course, (3) an upper-level seminar in the candidate’s area of specialty, (4) Introductory Psychology with a significant laboratory component that broadly represents psychological science, and (5) a sophomore-level course on Research Methods and Statistics. The teaching load is 5 courses per academic year. We seek applicants who are committed to a liberal arts education, teaching and working closely with students as a primary responsibility of the job, working with and supporting a diverse student community, and exposing students to a wide range of ideas and perspectives. We ask that the candidate provide evidence of a commitment to teaching excellence and/or evidence of successful undergraduate teaching, especially in biological psychology; a clear motivation to mentor undergraduates in a liberal arts setting; evidence of research productivity in psychological science and the potential to develop a productive research program with undergraduates on Denison’s campus; a commitment to contribute actively to the growth of the Department and College, and to Denison’s Neuroscience concentration. We will consider the extent to which each candidate’s research perspective complements those currently represented in the Department. We will also consider experience overcoming, or helping others overcome, barriers to academic success, and/or activities the candidate proposes implementing to enhance the college’s inclusive excellence. The candidate’s teaching statement, research statement, and diversity statement will be reviewed carefully for evidence of the qualities described above.

Candidates applying on or before October 4, 2021 will receive full consideration. Position open until filled. The hired candidate must provide proof of academic degree(s). The final candidate will undergo a background check as a condition of offer of employment.

Departmental and institutional support is available for teaching and research. Support includes Denison’s Center for Learning and Teaching, dedicated research space, start-up research funds, an annual professional development account, eligibility for Denison University Research Foundation grant applications, stipends for choosing to supervise summer-research students, and a one-semester pre-tenure leave contingent upon performance. Denison offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.
