[FUN_Mail] Lab Fees

At Washington College, we are in the process of instituting a $30 lab fee for all lab-based courses. Currently, it is unclear whether this fee will prevent erosion of our lab consumables budgets or will feed into a fund for equipment maintenance and replacement. Like Lycoming, we have traditionally funded new equipment (over $2000) using money from elsewhere in our administration.

Hi Judith,

Lycoming College has a $75 lab fee for all natural science lab courses. This money is part of our department's annual budget, and we use it to purchase routine consumables, repair old equipment, etc. Larger single purchases ($500 or more) go into separate requests to Administration in January for the following academic year, and many of those are approved and funded from separate sources by Administration.

Best regards,
Mary

Hi all,
If you offer a neuroscience lab course, how much are your lab fees? Do you use crayfish and/or other pricey materials/supplies?
Thanks in advance,
-Judy Ogilvie

Hi Judy,
I teach two upper level neuroscience courses with labs. Reed does not charge a lab fee for any of its science (lab) courses. The courses are costly as we use rodent models, and include stereotaxic surgeries etc.
Students also carry out independent lab projects to prepare them for their senior thesis. Again no additional cost is applied to any student. I realize that this may not be the norm, but it does help those students who might have financial constraints.
Best,
Paul

We have a lab fee of $75. We let it build up to purchase better equipment/upgrades.
