Neuroscience Program, Lake Forest College
The Lake Forest College Neuroscience Program<https://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/majors-and-minors/neuroscience> invites applications for a newly created tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level or higher, starting August 2024. We seek a highly qualified neuroscientist to teach our lab-based core course NEUR 301 Neuroscience I: Neuron to Brain, an introductory neuroscience course for the major, and an upper-level elective course or senior seminar in the applicant’s area of expertise. Postdoctoral experience is required and demonstrated excellence in teaching beyond traditional TA experience is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm for a liberal arts education. They will also develop an active undergraduate-led research program investigating the nervous system at the neuron level, adding to our current program expertise, resulting in peer-reviewed publications, and external funding applications. The Neuroscience Program believes that diversity, equity, and inclusion are key to academic excellence and seeks candidates with professional and lived experiences that strengthen their ability to integrate these concepts in their teaching and when mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
Lake Forest College provides competitive start-up funds, support for undergraduate researchers supervised by federally funded faculty, and a new interdisciplinary science center that houses a tissue culture lab, imaging facility, aquatic and terrestrial vivarium, and a greenhouse. Members of our interdisciplinary program are affiliated with various departments, including Biology, Psychology, Mathematics and Computer Science, Theater, Music, Philosophy, and English, and we welcome candidates with interdisciplinary teaching and research interests. We are part of a thriving Chicago area neuroscience community of educators and researchers, and our college enjoys a strong institutional partnership with Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science with easy access to their core scientific research and equipment facilities.
A highly selective liberal arts college, Lake Forest College enrolls approximately 1,700 students from more than 40 states and from more than 70 countries. Lake Forest is one of the most diverse small colleges in the Midwest with nearly 40% of our student body being domestic minority and international students. The majority of our STEM pool is female and also includes a significant number of first generation and traditionally underrepresented students. We attract highly motivated and strong students and provide them with excellent outcomes (e.g., over 60% of neuroscience majors have gone on to graduate school since the program was created). At Lake Forest College, the quality of a faculty member’s teaching is the most important criterion for evaluation. The College also expects peer-reviewed publications and active participation in the College community. Lake Forest College embraces diversity and encourages applications from women, members of historically underrepresented groups, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Lake Forest College has been recognized as a top college by U.S. News & World Report, including #2 in the nation for Social Mobility and #16 as a Best Value College. Princeton Review ranks the College #4 for best science lab facilities, among other top distinctions.
