Happy Brain Awareness Week, 2023!

In celebration of Brain Awareness Week, the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience’s Public Policy Committee is inviting you to help promote the public’s understanding of neuroscience education and research at the undergraduate level!

What: We are in the process of creating and disseminating Potentiating NEURO: Potentiating Neuroscience Education through Undergraduate Research and Outreach, a publicly available outreach manual with the purpose of facilitating undergraduate student-led neuroscience community outreach and increasing the scope and awareness of undergraduate neuroscience research and education. Potentiating NEURO will serve as a helpful reference for neuroscience faculty and students, specifically at the undergraduate level, who wish to organize outreach activities to increase the scope and awareness of neuroscience in our daily lives. This manual consists of advice, feedback, templates and outlines of previously held undergraduate-led outreach events to facilitate the creation of more outreach events by undergraduate students, faculty, and institutions.

Who: Anyone with prior experience organizing, volunteering with, or attending neuroscience outreach initiatives that were largely run by undergraduate students and organizations are welcome to contribute examples of the types of events you have had success with in the past. Any individual – whether you are at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution, R1 institution, Community College, Industry, etc. - who wishes to share their examples of successful undergraduate-led neuroscience events is welcome to contribute!

How: Details of activities may be entered directly into this google form<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSewKnmoi3uvKuN3w_FOh0CzAb5Vd_5qb2HnqoC8VnQ_go-LQw/viewform?usp=sf_link> or by uploading a template (Word document, presentation or PDF) of your activity to the form. Please submit a separate google form (or uploaded document) for each individual event (ie one for a primary school event, another for a science center event, etc). Suggested content to include in your file includes:

Title of your activity,

Target age group,

Ideal group size,

Type of event - workshop, lecture/seminar, K-12 school program, virtual program, etc.

Ideal location - classroom, library, science center, virtual, etc.,

Required time for preparing for and running the activity,

Resources and supplies needed (including the estimated budget),

Description of the activity (including learning objectives),

Reference(s) for explaining the background and content to the target audience,

Advice for implementing the idea based on your prior experience or “lessons learned?”

Would you like to share any audience feedback?

Any idea credits and citations (as well as acknowledgement of support, if appropriate)!

When: The submission form is now open for submissions! We will be accepting submissions on a rolling basis until 11:59pm on May 31st, 2023. In celebration of Brain Awareness Week, we will circulate some examples of activities later in March! Our committee will be compiling and creating the official Potentiating NEURO manual in Summer 2023.

Feel free to contact us with any questions (aparnashah at vt.edu<mailto:aparnashah at vt.edu>; stryon at richmond.edu<mailto:stryon at richmond.edu> ) . We look forward to receiving your contributions and hearing about your undergraduate-led brain outreach and service learning activities!
