Kurt,
I would like to nominate Veronica Martinez Acosta for the FUN Award for
Fostering Diversity & Inclusivity. Dr. Martinez Acosta is a Professor of
Biology at University of the Incarnate Word, which is a Hispanic serving
institution. Dr. Martinez Acosta earned her Ph.D. in Zoology from Texas A&M
University and did a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas.
Her lab at UIW studies molecular mechanisms governing neural regeneration
and wound healing in the annelid worm, Lumbriculus variegatus. She has
mentored many undergraduate students from UIW and local community colleges
as well as high school students, many of whom are from minoritized and/or
first-generation populations. She has obtained grants in support of these
undergraduate researchers from NSF, a NIMH NRSA, and a High School
Apprenticeship Program (HSAP)/Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program
(URAP) for research education outreach. She was also a SOMAS award winner.
Most recently she was the PI at UIW on a DoD Research and Education Program
for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving
Institutions (HBCU/MI) for over $600K. Dr Martinez Acosta has received
several faculty awards from her university in recognition to her teaching,
research, and service to her students.
Dr. Martinez Acosta was also instrumental in developing the Marine
Biological Laboratory Summer Program in Neuroscience and Success summer
course (SPINES), supporting the training of summer students at the
Laboratory.
Dr. Martinez Acosta has published on issues surrounding diversity, equity
and inclusion for several years. In JUNE, she and her coauthors published
on the retention of underrepresented minority faculty and the need for
strategic action at the university level. A paper in Frontiers in
Integrative Neuroscience on effective mentorship as a means to diversify
neuroscience has been well received and has over 7,000 views since it was
published earlier this year. Dr. Martinez Acosta is also a coauthor on
FUN’s statement on diversity equity and inclusion as well as serving as FUN
treasurer.
In my interactions with Dr. Martinez Acosta I have learned so much from
her and I value her leadership, her work in the DEI arena and her continued
dedication to the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience.
