Dear FUN Friends:
The next CrawFly Invertebrate Neurophysiology Workshop will be offered June 11th through 15th, 2024 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. This workshop is hosted by ADInstruments and the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at Cornell, and supported by A-M Systems. CrawFly is entering its second decade of international teaching workshops for Neuroscience educators and trainees. We present training for lab exercises teaching fundamental principles of signal transmission in the nervous system, tutorials on the use of LabChart software for acquisition and analysis of electrophysiological data from crayfish, and the control of behavior and synaptic transmission with opto-genetic stimulation of fruit flies. Do-it-Yourself (DIY) sessions include construction of a new precision mini-manipulator and optogenetic light box (both to take home), and the building and use of an inexpensive DIY fluorescence microscope for teaching and research. We brainstorm best practices in laboratory and classroom teaching, with topics including interdisciplinary training for students and educators for big data neuroscience and the importance and implementation of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals. Core faculty include Ron Hoy, David Deitcher and Bruce Johnson (Cornell University), Ilya Vilinsky (University of Cincinnati), Karen Hibbard (HHMI at Janelia Research Campus), Bob Wyttenbach (Emory University), Jim Ryan (Hobart-William Smith Colleges), Ulises Ricoy (University of Arizona) and ADInstruments educators.
