A quick reminder that applications for the 2024 BRAINS cohort are due soon. All selected applicants will be placed into one of the two program pathways<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://brains.uw.edu/program__;!!F8lEXw!-MyyfGd-jun71q8BJ2YUDWnHG7pgPLTPOyeWJ1vqLZ5mjDwSmlQykSYSavbGx-G09Ux_PEhpQaCB$>.



BRAINS participants are early-career neuroscientists from underrepresented groups who are pursuing or interested in pursuing academic careers. For the 2024 BRAINS cohort, we are interested not only in early-career applicants from any area of neuroscience but also early-career researchers who have expertise at the intersection of neuroscience and society.  To be eligible for the program, applicants must be (1) early career (pre-tenure) Ph.D. (or equivalent doctoral degree) scholars in neuroscience-related fields; (2) US citizens or Permanent Residents; and (3) interested in academic neuroscience or neuroscience-related careers. We encourage applications from individuals whose participation will contribute to the mission of the BRAINS program to enhance diversity. BRAINS is an NINDS-funded, national program dedicated to advancing diversity and inclusion in neuroscience. BRAINS uses a unique cohort-based professional development approach to explicitly address the inclusion, retention, and advancement of early-career neuroscientists from diverse backgrounds, including historically underrepresented and marginalized groups. The BRAINS experience positively impacts participants’ career trajectories, especially in academic neuroscience, and creates a perpetually empowering community.



The 2024 BRAINS cohort will include early-career (pre-tenure) Ph.D. scientists in any neuroscience-related fields who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. For the 2024 BRAINS cohort, with support by a grant from the Dana Foundation, we are also interested in eligible individuals who have expertise at the intersection of neuroscience and society (e.g., neuroscience and public health, neuroscience and ethics, etc.). 2024 participants will join a community of around 180 neuroscientists who are thriving in their careers.



A 2022 participant described their BRAINS experience as follows: “Participating in BRAINS gave me a stronger identity as a neuroscientist… [BRAINS] prepared me for success in [my] transition, both in terms of professional development, but also in serving as a reminder that I do belong in academic neuroscience research.”
