[FUN_Mail] hearing experiments online and hands-on

About engaging hearing experiments:

With my Neuro 211 Intro to Neuro II students, I use some fantastic Monash University online hearing experiments here:
https://ilearn.med.monash.edu.au/physiology/experiments/hearing/#background

The students get to take online hearing tests with different sound frequencies, experience simulations of what it's like for people with different degrees of hearing losses to try to follow conversations in crowded rooms, and engage in a word discrimination test. There's a brief section explaining the biphasic pulse shape used in cochlear implants. And there is even an auditory spatial tuning experiment that measures intraaural level differences. My students really liked this one because they could see how it tied in to the classic Knudsen and Brainard papers on barn owl auditory and visual mapping onto the tectum that we were reading together at the time.

You can also do a simple home-grown set of experiments using any online tone generator, where the students determine their own ability to hear tones of different frequencies. Just search for "tone generator" and tons of these pop up.

And of course, there's the Backyard Brains experiment where the students can reverse-engineer arthropod legs to kick to the beat of any high-bass pop song on their phones:

Best regards,
Mary Morrison

Hi Dorothy,
I have done this activity for sensation and perception. You can discuss just noticeable differences and absolute threshold.

? 1. Lab activities for Hearing (Kozlowski, Dorothy) ? 2. Re: Lab activities for Hearing (William Grisham)

Hi All,

I?m reaching out to ask if anyone has any undergraduate lab activities focusing on the sense of hearing that they?re willing to share.? I?m teaching an upper-level course on Sensory Neuroscience and have not been able to find an engaging hearing lab that works (we tried one on sound localization where people sit in a circle and try to guess where the sound is coming from ? but it didn?t really work well in our hands).? I have done some online searches, searched JUNE as well as the FUN website but haven?t been very successful.

 ?

If you?ve come up with something you?re willing to share, I?d appreciate it !

Thanks

Dorothy

 Hi Dorothy,
We have a couple exercises for an equal loudness plot and an absolute threshold task--both online.https://ucla.box.com/s/y3fe813a09c2rmuf5sevr8t2lio61vpq?
Also, we developed a delayed auditory feedback module--delaying a student's own voice by 200 ms induces them to stutter.https://ucla.box.com/s/wwtwo9v8z6qo8718eduz7htrphzbs98w?It works--but the Method of limits study that I designed didn't work because descendingb trials give whacky data.?
